Western Springs Hall Of Fame
Last Thursday night the 7th
February 2008 the Western Springs Speedway Club held a celebration for 70 years
of midgets at Western Springs. This was a significant milestone.
Not only did the first running mark the beginning of midgets but it
signified the introduction of car racing from which T.Qs. Sprint-cars,
Kiwi Kidz followed
It was a fabulous night with a great
attendance of speedway fans and we had s fantastic display of historic
cars and memorabilia.
Jason Jones made beautiful pictorial
plaques of the first American team to visit New Zealand and they were presented
to each member of this years American and New Zealand test teams.
Also it was the inauguration of the Western
Springs Speedway Hall of Fame. Some of our early icons of speedway
were paid recognition for their contribution to our sport. In-depth research
will be done into all inductees and their full record of achievement and
contribution will be permanently displayed on this web site and in plaques in
our clubrooms.

History making meeting
Tuesday night 16-10-07, a history making
event took place when an executive committee was elected for the Western
Springs Speedway Club representing unity in all sections of speedway at Western
Springs including Sprint Cars, Midgets, T.Q.s, Kiwi Kids, Promotion, Vintage,
Supporters, Patrons plus a President, Treasurer and Secretary. This is
the first time speedway at Western Springs has had such unity since the
inception when Promoters, council and public banded together more than 77 years
ago to create the stadium. Unlike other sports clubs such as bowls,
hockey or other, speedway at Western Springs has many sections and interested
parties all having their own club or interest in speedway. The Western
Springs Speedway Club has allowed them all to come together into one with
representation from each section for the good of speedway yet independently
maintain their own entity. Club rooms have been negotiated which is
also a first for Western Springs Speedway. Strength is in numbers and collectively
our speedway will benefit from that. Here is looking and hoping for a
great future for our club and speedway at Western Springs.
The Western Springs Speedway Club was initiated in October 2003.
It is a legal entity with all funds being held in a trust account controlled by
solicitors.
The main purpose of the club is to be a united voice for the preservation of Speedway as we have
grown to know and love since 1929. To establish a permanent home for the
Western Springs Speedway community, by building a facility to serve as a
Function Centre for an end of season ball for drivers of all classes and their
fans to attend, club rooms for the various sections of Speedway, amenities for
the general public to enjoy and a museum to house and display the vast
collection of exhibits and memorabilia, a lot of which at present, is
fragmented among a number of private collections.
Initially it is the goal of the club to drive membership to a large number and
give the club strength and recognition from the various bodies we need to work
with to ensure that Western Springs has this facility permanently secure at the
stadium.
The speedway community is:
The Promoters of the day who put their money and efforts on the line each
season to bring enjoyment to all who participate in the exhilarating spectacle
of Western Springs world class speedway.
The officials who mostly devote their energy and time free for the love of the
sport.
The competitors, crew, supporters and families who generation after generation,
week after week, devote long hours of meticulous endeavour to bring a standard
to racing and equipment to the track that is of the highest world standard.
The individual clubs that represent each racing division of speedway; Sprint
Car, Midget, Three Quarter Midget, Quarter Midget, Motorcycle, Vintage and
other bodies supportive of Speedway at Western Springs.
Most importantly the general public and families, who for generations have come
to enjoy the spectacle and tradition of speedway at Western Springs.
The Western Springs Speedway Club is a non-political organization
charged with the desire to support efforts that enhance the presence of Speedway at Western
Springs and to establish the continuance of the 77-year heritage of racing
tradition.
The club is made up of individual members with a democratically elected
committee.
Western Springs Stadium is Auckland’s home of Speedway racing. This club and proposed facility will establish a permanent
home for the Speedway community there.
Western
Springs Speedway Club (est 2003) is an organisation committed to stopping
the closure of Springs Speedway
