Re: Western Springs Speedway

Warwick, Dave, Bill.
I am writing this letter to thank you for the great hospitality that your group has showed us, Warwick for taking us in to his workshop and helping us with anything that we needed. I was reminded everyday from Dwight and Wade Huston how lucky we were to have our race cars there.

Dave Stewart, we would like to take time to express our gratitude as well as your staff who are second to none. Thanks again for taking good care of us. My wife Brenda and our twin daughters had the time of their lives. If it wasn’t for the racing at Western Springs Speedway, I probably wouldn’t have ever made it to New Zealand. What a selling point for New Zealand.

Bill Buckley, I would to take time to thank you also, it was a great time. The world needs a lot of Bill Buckleys. Thanks for your efforts to keep us Americans coming every year and trying to preserve the great tradition at Western Springs Speedway. Don’t give up!!!

As this is a thank you letter I would also like to add how great tradition is. It would be a down right shame that Springs Speedway could get shut down. This facility is one of the greatest in the world. I have been to fifty or more race tracks around the U.S. This is one of the best facilities and traditions I have ever seen. It’s too bad that a few people can ruin it for all of the other people who love it. I always thought the dog wags the tail, not the tail wags the dog. The frustration I have seen with the council goes beyond the racers, from taxi drivers to bar tenders, store owners and workers, restaurants, truck drivers etc. No matter who I talked to about speedway they just don’t get how a few people can ruin such a great tradition. The people I talked to want to see more racing. The taxi driver that I mentioned earlier has been going to the springs since 1948. Since he was a kid, then his kids and now his grandchildren. I told him why I was there, then we arrived at our destination and he would hardly let me out of the taxi. Telling me all this, he said he would take care of the $30-00 taxi ride, of course I denied and thanked him for support of Western Springs Speedway. The rules are set up for failure and to help close speedway or fine Springs Promotions. These people should be ashamed of themselves. If the council can’t even give the same consideration as a music concert then the whole thing is set to fail. If the track was there first, then people should consider this first. Majority out rules the minority. That’s democracy. Me personally, I would take this to referendum and have public vote. Shame to the few people on the hill and the council members that can’t be reasonable. How many tourism dollars are spent in New Zealand because of Speedway? We had a group of 27 people just from Wisconsin. Just guessing, but it wouldn’t be hard to say in excess of $200,000-00 or more plus what Warwick, Bill and Springs Promotions spent catering for us. Their efforts helping us put a lot of money back into your community, restaurants, car rental, motel rooms, tours, gift shops taxi’s pubs, then put the G.S.T. for the government. No, this is a great deal for New Zealand. This should get bigger, not smaller. It would be one of the greatest tragedies for the Springs to lose their racing as well as the traditions and history.
Sorry for the lengthy letter but being involved in racing for 40 plus years, it’s hard to set back and be quiet.
To the people who work hard keeping history alive, thank you.
Your friend,
Hans Lein
