IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT SPEEDWAY26/10/2008

Speedway News

Speedway at Western Springs was nearly closed because of only a few residents who moved close to the stadium more than 50 years after speedway commented there and speedway had run harmoniously with all residents without complaint up until that time.

The Labour government gave a few militant residents upwards of $80.000-00 dollars to help them try to have speedway closed. Well those residents neglected to file a single mandatory declaration back to the government or to meet their obligations in accordance with the registered societies act.  They just do as they please and say what they want, true or false and our Auckland City Council Jumps.

Well those guys nearly were successful had it not been that speedway went out to the people of Auckland.  A demonstration march went from Surry Crescent to the stadium and more than 56.000 people signed a petition in support of speedway continuing at Western Springs.  Remember the chant Bruce Hucker Dog Tucker well councillor Hucker lost the favour of the people and did end up Dog Tucker.

What’s more the entire council after persuasion to a couple of stubborn councillors voted unanimously that speedway should remain at Western Springs.

A commissioner was appointed to make recommendations on the rules under which speedway should run.  Everyone was excited that at last someone will be making sensible recommendations that would allow speedway to operate as it had previously done for that last 65 years. Nearly 80 years in total.

Sadly the commissioner submitted a very harsh report on speedway and we are not sure of what underlying influences prompted him to make the report he did. We do know that the expert advisers he relied on made serious blunders to their noise equations and conjectured surmises.

Now a largely new council has been elected amongst whom are known anti speedway campaigners.

This council has decided to reject the petition now and voted, not unanimously but in a majority against the continuance of Speedway at Western Springs.  We cannot let the dust settle on this issue.  We must rise up and get rid of the councillors who think they can represent their own agendas against the wises of the Auckland City Residents who they are obligated to serve.

A new petition will be raised in support of speedway remaining at Western Springs and a resource consent be granted for speedway to operate at achievable levels of noise with sensible number of meetings and finish times.  (Not half way through the feature races.)
